How browser screen recording works

A practical guide to capture permissions, browser compatibility, local processing and safe exports.

1. Screen capture requires your permission

The browser opens its own display-sharing picker. You choose which display, application window or browser tab to share. A website cannot silently select a screen for you, and you can stop sharing through the browser’s own controls.

2. Webcam and audio are optional

The camera overlay is optional and can be placed in any corner. Audio settings depend on the streams your browser exposes. System audio availability differs between browsers and operating systems, so check the capture dialog and make a short test recording before an important session.

3. The browser encodes the recording

The tool composites the selected display and optional camera into a canvas, then asks the browser’s MediaRecorder API to encode it using a supported format. Codec availability varies; the format list is detected at runtime. High resolutions and long recordings may consume considerable RAM and storage.

4. Your recording stays in this browser session

Recording data is held in browser memory while you work. Zeromits does not receive the video or audio. Download your recording before resetting the workspace or closing the tab. If the browser or device runs out of memory, a long recording may fail; shorter sessions or lower resolution can help.

5. Privacy and safe recording

Only capture content you have permission to record. Check for confidential information, notifications, personal data and other people’s voices before sharing a recording. The tool requests camera and microphone permission only when you enable those features.
